God Knows our Needs

We were living in Guatemala, and my husband and I had legally separated. I was having a difficult time financially.

I hosted several prayer groups in my home each week. We would have the women's group on Thursday, the youth group on Fridays, and a family group on Saturday evenings.

It was often necessary for me to make several trips picking up all the youth who were not in walking distance to my home, and then after the group I took all of the members of the group home. On special occasions we could have up to fifty people in the group.

On Thursday afternoon I would leave at 2pm to go to a town about 40 miles away and pick up the leader of the group. I would then stop on the way back and pick up everyone who had no transportation but wished to attend. It could sometimes take a good hour and a half to do this. Sometimes the women would stay and chat after the group and I would begin the return trip anywhere between 7:30pm and 11:00pm. I had many experiences with the Lord and His care at this time.

I usually would always make sure that I had enough money to at least have gas in my car for these trips, but somehow on this particular day I had forgotten that. I neither had gas in my car nor money to purchase any. I had no telephone and I knew that the leader as well as the women in the group would be expecting to have their usual meeting in the afternoon.

I went to God in prayer. I said, "Lord, I do not want to disappoint these ladies, and I know that you can make a car run without gasoline if you want to, or you can provide the money to buy gasoline for my car. If, when it comes time to go pick up the leader, I do not have the money nor the gas, then I will just go and I know that you will take me and return me safely home. "

Inside I knew that I would go. Actually I believed that the car would run without the gas. But I knew that I was going to go, there was no doubt in my mind. I spent a while in His presence and became so lost in Him that I forgot all about the situation.

As I arose to leave my room, someone knocked on the gate downstairs, and I went out to answer. The maid of one of my neighbors down the street held out a bag to me, and said, "My employer said to give you this." I thanked her and took a look inside the bag. There were fresh vegetables and fruit inside. I took it to the kitchen and laid it on the counter and begin doing my housework.

About an hour later the maid was at my door once again, this time to tell me that I had a phone call at their home. I ran quickly down the street to answer, and while I was there I thanked my friend for sending me the veggies and fruit. She looked a little surprised and said, "was that all you found in the bag?"

I answered that I had not really looked through the bag, because I was hurrying to get my house cleaned for the prayer group. She just answered, "oh, ok"

When I got home I took the vegetables and the fruit out of the bag and begin putting them away. Down at the very bottom was a folded piece of paper. As I opened it a 20 quetzal bill fell from the paper. It was enough money to fill my gas tank. I was so amazed, even while I was still praying, God had sent the answer.

We had a very special prayer group that afternoon, and I saw once again how the Lord cares for His children.

"For they will be a people blessed by the Lord, and their descendents with them. Before they call I will answer, while they are still speaking I will hear" Isaiah 65:23b
