Ketchup

It was just one of those crazy things that we can't explain. My husband loved ketchup, and he used it on almost everything.

One morning I noticed that we were out and made a mental note to pick some up at the supermarket that day.

About noon, when I was putting the lunch on the table, I realized that I had forgotten it. "It's too late now, I'll get it tomorrow," I thought, although I knew that my husband would not be happy.

The next morning I was off to the market as usual, but with this thing and that, I soon forgot about the ketchup.

Everyday, I would promise to pick it up, and every day I would forget. After the 2nd day, I wrote a list. I was careful to put ketchup on that list, but when I got home, again I found that I had forgotten it.

I put a string on my finger, and then didn't remember why. I prayed that God would remind me, but still I forgot.

My husband was not pleased. "I give you so much money to shop with, you would think that you could at least remember one little bottle of ketchup," he said, in not the most pleasant tone.

About this time I was doing my housework one morning, when a friend from down the street arrived. It had been a while since we'd seen each other, and so I anticipated a pleasant visit. As I answered the door she said, "Oh, I am so embarrassed, the Lord woke me up this morning and told me to bring you this, 'I said, Lord, why would you want me to take her that. She has everything she needs, and you ask me to take her that?' but the Lord insisted so here it is," she said as she handed me a brown paper bag.

I opened the bag and looked inside. To my amazement, I found two bottles of my husband's favorite brand of ketchup. I explained to her what had been happening, and we both had a good laugh.

When she had left, I went to the sofa, with the bag containing the ketchup in my hand. As I sat down I was perplexed, I closed my eyes and said, "But Lord, why ketchup?"

Instantly I heard His reply as clearly as He had ever spoken, "My child," he said,"don't you see that if I know your need for ketchup, that I also know everything else of which you have need?"

I realized that He was right. So many times I let myself get worried about small things, but He had never failed me. I know that He could have reminded me to buy the ketchup at anytime, but He wanted to teach me how much He cares. I have never forgotten it.

"And my God shall supply all your needs, according to His riches in Glory, through Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19
